'The Woman At The Well' Print
'The Woman At The Well' Print
This is a detailed print of my original painting 'The Woman At The Well'.
I have loved this Bible story for as long as I can remember. I love how many special moments are captured between Christ and women in the Bible.
We read of this woman in John 4. Early on in Christ’s ministry, he stopped by a town in Samaria. He rested by a well while His disciples went into town to purchase food. A Samaritan woman came from the town to fetch water at the well. While she went about her task, Christ began talking to her, asking her for a drink. She was taken aback, because at this time, Jews did not associate with Samaritans. Their conversation continued, with this woman eventually realizing that He was the Messiah. Once she realized this, she left her water pot at the well and rushed to the town, telling her people of the Messiah.
There are so many beautiful lessons I’ve learned from this story. I love so much that it begins with just one woman. Her faith created a huge ripple effect that resulted in many people coming to know Christ. I love to think about how the little things we do have those same ripple effects, helping those around us feel Christ’s love.
I relate to this woman, who was so busy with the task of fetching water, that at first she did not recognize Christ as the Messiah. Being busy also often distracts me from the most important thing in my life, which is my relationship with Christ. I love that He didn’t give up on her, but kept talking to Her until she understood who He was and what His teachings could do for her life. I know that He also never gives up on me. He is constantly seeking me out.
The last lesson that I love from this story is how Christ cares for ‘the outcasts’. In His time, it was very controversial of Him (a Jewish man) to be talking to this Samaritan woman, who was considered inferior to Him due to her ethnicity, sex, and relationship history. Christ saw past all of those cultural and ethnic boundaries. He saw her for who she was on the inside.
His love is a perfect love. He comes to the outcasts. He meets us where we are. He patiently waits for us to understand who He is and what He does for us. I am so grateful for this beautiful story and what this woman has taught me.
