An original painting sized 5x7 inches titled 'My Refuge'. 

When I was a young girl I experienced years of sexual abuse by a family friend. This abuse resulted in me developing depression, anxiety, and OCD when I was 6. It also resulted in me being very uncomfortable around and afraid of most men. It took me years and years of therapy to begin to heal my heart. In my darkest moments as a young girl, when I didn’t fully understand what was happening to me, and I couldn’t comprehend the gravity of how much it would change my life, I would sit in the dark and think ‘does He really know this pain?’. ‘does He really know this loneliness?’ ‘does He really know this anger?’ ‘does He really know this sorrow?’

I clung to Him in those dark days. There was safety and light in Him. And although I wish that had never happened to me, I am grateful that it taught me to cling to Him. I’m so grateful that since I was a tiny girl, I was taught that He had experienced my pain. That He had suffered for all of my unfairness and all of my sorrow in the garden of Gethsemane. That He understood all of the extremely complicated and intricate pain and emotions perfectly. Knowing those truths saved me then, and they still save me now, whenever I find myself in a dark place. He is and always has been my refuge.

I know that He feels the pain of every abused child, every grieving mother, every overwhelmed father, every lonely friend, every misunderstood sibling, every hopefully parent, every anxious child. Everyone. Everything. I know He understands perfectly what you are going through right now, what you went through yesterday, what you went through five years ago, and what you went through thirty years ago. I know He wept with you when you were a child, and He still weeps with you today.
