I remember many nights like this as a teenager who felt alone in the world. My teenage years were hard and lonely - I moved to America when I was 13 and for years afterwards I felt an extreme sense of ‘otherness’ and isolation. I had a hard time making friends, I felt so different than everyone around me, and I felt completely alone. Instead of going out to parties on Friday nights, I stayed in with my mom who often felt like my only friend. We would snuggle, eat treats, and watch movies together. To this day, my friendship with my mom is one of the things in this life I hold the most dear.
