His love is what has reached out across the universe countless times and reminded me that I am His. I am loved. I am here for a purpose. I perish! dear Master. Oh, hasten and take control! The winds and the waves shall obey thy will: Peace, be still.’ This song makes me think about all the times in my life where I felt like I was in a tempest, being tossed to and fro. It makes me think of the many times I have looked to Christ with tears running down my face, saying ‘I am perishing. Help me. I’m all alone, no one understands, I need you now.’ Ironically it’s in those moments, when I have felt the most lonely, that I have had some of my most sacred experiences with Him.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eWhen I see this painting I am reminded that after the storm, always comes peace. Peace from Him. The peace that passeth all understanding. The peace that I have only ever found through Him.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eWhether you are in the middle of a storm, just coming out of one, or can see one approaching, I hope this painting can help you to feel and remember the peace He brings. But what we don’t understand in the moment, is the beauty He is making out of our lives. Just imagine what we can become if we let Him shape us. Just as a potter holds the clay in His hands, Christ holds us in His hands. This woman cannot see the flowers that are blossoming from her, but they are there. Mary still exhausted after labor, her belly still swollen, her body aching, keeping herself awake and singing lullabies to the King of Kings. Swaying and rocking him to sleep. Holding his little hands and comforting him. Raising and loving and saving the one who would eventually save us all. Jesus, fresh to the world, surrounded by new sounds, cold air, hunger, and pain. Clinging to His mama for warmth, sustenance, and safety. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve been asked to paint the woman with the issue of blood. I am so honored to finally have the perfect opportunity to paint her. I love her and her story so much. She is one of the people I hope I can meet and hug in heaven. I think that her story could actually capture so many different words, but I chose to depict her story for the word ‘hope’ because I think that she is an incredible example of hoping. Hoping in the lonely, in the pain, in the suffering, in the uncertainty. After twelve years of being shunned, cast out, deemed unworthy, and left alone, she placed her hope in the Savior. During her twelve years of suffering, this woman had spent all of her money on medical treatments from various doctors. None of the treatments had worked, and she was left destitute and desperate for a miracle. When she saw Jesus walking through a busy crowd, she found the strength and humility within herself to touch His robes, and in turn be healed. Because of her disease, she was considered ‘unclean’. She was not supposed to touch anyone, or else they would also become ‘unclean’. Learning this has made this story even more powerful to me. The amount of bravery and humility it must have taken her to touch Christ’s robes is astounding. And when she touched His robes, He did not become ‘unclean’. Instead, her made her clean. Fully, completely, healed and cleansed. To me, this woman is an example of faith, resilience, confidence, and more. But most of all she is an example of hope. If this woman could retain her hope for healing after twelve years of suffering, surely I can remain hopeful for healing in my life. Surely I can remain hopeful that He is the one who can heal me and take away what has burdened me.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eIn this piece I did not want to show the woman’s full face because I wanted anyone who looks at this piece to imagine that it is them. I knew in this piece I wanted the Savior to be giving a new, healed heart back to this woman. A heart that she thought was broken beyond repair, but that the Savior took in his healing hands and made new. In this piece you can see that the heart has been repaired with Kintsugi. Kintsugi (\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/%E9%87%91%E7%B6%99%E3%81%8E\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e金継ぎ\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e) is a Japanese pottery technique that I love to incorporate into my artwork. When the piece is put back together, the cracks are highlighted with a lacquer, rather than being disguised. Pottery repaired with Kintsugi is considered even more precious and valuable than it was before.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eI feel like the word ‘healing’ really captures what I have strived to do as an artist. It is a very special word to me. Over the past four years, my family has changed a lot. My parents separated and have been going through a divorce, and my idea of what my family was totally shattered. I felt like my heart was broken. You know that deep, deep sorrow, so deep it feels like your heart is physically in pain. What has gotten me through that pain is painting about my Savior, and also incorporating Kintsugi into my artwork. It has truly healed me, and healed my relationships. I know that He is the one that can taken broken things and make them new. That He perfectly, deeply understands our pain and our struggles, our sorrows, our challenges, our temptations. But painting this also reminded me that I believe He is with us in all of our joy as well. All of our triumphs, all of our laughter, all of our happiness, all of our love. He perfectly knows those feelings too, and He celebrates with us. He mourns with us, AND He celebrates with us. I thought the metaphor of watering a dying plant and healing it with water was especially beautiful because Christ is also known as ‘The Living Water’. Just as the water brings life back to this precious plant, He brings life back to us. Through Him, we are healed. And we are never past the point of no return. Never too far gone. Never too broken. All the things I worry about and struggle with. All the responsibilities that can feel so heavy. All of the difficulties that feel overwhelming. Maybe to you, these angels represent family and friends who have passed on, guardian angels who watch over you. We may not be able to see them, but I know that they are there, trying their best to provide us with relief. I know that they are there, because the Savior promised it. Pretty much all of the sheep in this painting are busy grazing. They aren’t paying attention to the storm clouds approaching. They are oblivious to how much work the shepherd is putting in to keeping them safe. A lot of the time they aren’t even aware of His constant, gentle presence. The sheep don’t fully realize what a taxing, exhausting, and often boring job it must be to watch over a flock so large.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eHow much are we like these sheep. So focused on all the things we think are important. Meanwhile, He is our steadfast shepherd. Watching over us, never abandoning us. There have been times where I’ve felt l like my faith is the size of planet earth, and times where it has felt as tiny as a mustard seed. The important thing is that I didn’t throw that seed away. This flower is actually a wild mustard plant flower - this plant has beautiful yellow blossoms. There are periods of darkness, when the night comes and we are lonely, when obstacles and heartache seems so much scarier and so much more daunting. When we just want to be held and told that everything will be okay. He is the ones who abides. He stays, He dwells, He remains. He is immovable in any circumstance, and He is the way by which we overcome our obstacles. This is a Japanese pottery technique where broken pottery is put back together with a gold lacquer. This technique has become a huge part of my life and my work, and I felt like it needed to be incorporated into this painting. To me Kintsugi is a reminder that Christ is able to heal and make something incredibly beautiful out of what I think is shattered.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003eI know that Christ perfectly knows and understands the different trials and heartbreak you have endured as a woman. I wanted to create a piece that could remind me that you are loved, treasured, and part of a bigger human family. You are surrounded by sisters. It’s hard to think about all of the things the savior endured for us. It’s hard to comprehend. But as I pondered this song and painted this piece, I was filled with immense gratitude for His willingness to wear the crown of thorns. A crown that was placed upon Him mockingly, to shame and scorn Him, but now has become a symbol of His victory and triumph over death. In this painting, His crown of thorns is blossoming with forget me not flowers and olive leaves. Olive leaves because they remind me of the Garden of Gethsemane, an olive grove. And forget me not flowers because I never ever ever want to forget what He has done for us. (If you’ve been here for a while, you know how much I love to incorporate these flowers into my religious pieces!) When Easter season comes around I am always reminded that I need to remember Him more. I don’t want to feel complacent about His sacrifice for me.
