This piece is inspired by a Japanese pottery technique called \u003ci\u003eKintsugi\u003c\/i\u003e (\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/%E9%87%91%E7%B6%99%E3%81%8E\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e金継ぎ\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, \"golden joinery\"). The broken pottery is fixed using a gold lacquer, which reattaches the pieces together and makes it whole again.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eThe purpose of this technique is to honor and highlight the history of the piece. It treats the breakage the piece has endured as something of beauty. I have been enraptured with this technique ever since I learned about it many years ago in my pottery class. It makes me emotional to just talk about.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e This painting depicts several female figurines that have been put back together with Kintsugi. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eWe are all broken in different ways. Some of us get injured physically, some of us deal with mental health illness, others of us fight eating disorders and feel at war with our body. For years I have felt like my mind was broken. Struggling with anxiety and depression, I have felt broken so many times. But I believe that our struggles and our broken pieces make us all the more beautiful.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eWe are ALL lumpy, bumpy, ‘imperfect’, and broken in certain ways. And all of those things are what make us so perfectly whole.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI use a beautiful, heavy-weight, acid-free paper for my prints. I thought it deserved a special painting. I’ve struggled with mental illness since I was a young child. I’ve felt broken beyond repair more times than I can count. I’m certain many of you have felt the same way. In recent months, the symbolism Kintsugi has meant a lot to me. It’s taught me that our history and difficulties do not have to be hidden. They can be highlighted, because our past is beautiful. Mental illness is an ongoing battle. I’m so grateful that we are starting to be able to talk about it more and more openly. I hope you know that, if you sometimes struggle with mental health, your difficulties and struggles are nothing to be ashamed of. They are what make you unique and beautiful. I hope this painting gives you some perspective and hope. Pretty much all of my anxiety, stress, panic, and fear comes from me trying to take on everything by myself. It comes from the pressure I put on myself to be the best wife, sister, daughter, friend, and business owner I can be. And guess what? Everything gets overwhelming real fast. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI’ve had this painting in my head for a year and a half. I wanted it to be the first thing I painted in 2022 because I want my year to be full of surrender. I can’t do it alone. I can’t hold it all alone. Only when I ask and plead and invite Christ to carry it with me, to carry it FOR me, does my anxiety and fear and heartache start to dissipate. Surrender to Him. That is what I yearn for. To me surrender doesn’t mean giving up. It means being vulnerable enough to recognize when I need help. Or what it’s like to live with pain, or trauma, or difficult burdens. I’ve always tried to create art that captures emotions that words can’t describe. It’s been a while since I painted something just for me. This painting makes me feel understood, and also hopeful. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnxiety has been a constant in my life. A constant feeling in my heart, a constant humming in my brain. I’ve come really far in my life, and I have found peace, but that doesn’t mean it’s not difficult. I still have days where it feels like anxiety is just dominating my life. It’s really hard. It can be even harder to ask for help, because how do you explain feelings and emotions that not even you understand? The point of creating this painting I guess was to help myself better visualize and understand how I feel. And to send solidarity to anyone who might feel the same way, whether that be anxiety, depression, trauma, trials you are going through etc. You are brave. You are strong! You are capable. You are living with heavy things. Although this girl is surrounded with difficulty, she is not giving up. She is trying to understand herself. After all, no one in the history of the world was more shattered and broken than our Savior. Our Savior who was broken for us. Who endured all of our individual pain and trials, the difficulties and sorrow of every single person who ever lived. This scripture has always felt so powerful to me, but I was reminded of it this week. While I most often picture Him as peaceful and contented, it was important for me to remember that He was a man of sorrows. In fact, the One who felt the sorrows of the entire world, of every person that has ever been. This belief has been profoundly important to me as I’ve gone through my life. To know that He perfectly understands what I’ve gone through and what I experience every day. To know that He has felt my sorrows and that because of Him I can overcome them. To know that He became deeply acquainted with grief FOR us. That knowledge is what has allowed me to heal, to become who I am supposed to be, to love fully. I recently had several people tell me they need a ‘winter’ Jesus for Christmas time. I thought that was an amazing idea for several reasons. I feel like I typically depict Christ in flowers\/springtime, and I feel like we don't typically see Him portrayed in settings like this.  I also think that depicting him in winter is beautifully symbolic. It really got me thinking about what that means to me, and this image came to me so clearly! For my whole life, winter has been hard for me. It is full of endings, seasonal depression, loss of light, cold weather, and anxiety about what is to come next. In addition to experiencing physical winters throughout our lives, I think we all experience symbolic ‘winters’ in our lives. Periods of difficulty, darkness, loneliness, endings, sadness, change. This painting was born from those themes. In it we see a girl nourishing herself, pouring water on the beautiful flowers growing out of her head. Not a selfish act, but an act of self love. She is putting effort into herself, becoming who she is supposed to be. The cracks are considered a beautiful part of the pottery’s history. Something that has made the pot even more beautiful and valuable than it was before. The Savior has done this for me time and time again. He takes the parts of my life that feel shattered, and turns them into something more beautiful than I ever imagined.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003eAs I go through life and experience hard things, I am often filled with gratitude for those difficulties, because they have brought me so close to Christ. I know that He suffered for all of my individual pain. He knows all of my experiences, my trials, my difficulties, my fears, my brokenness. And because He knows my pain so deeply, He has the power to heal and bind me up in ways that no one else can. My brokenness connects me with Him and makes me one with Him. You can’t tell if it is a man or woman, you can’t tell what skin color they have or what they look like. The clay must be kneaded and wedged before you can throw it on the wheel. After throwing, it has to be dried over several days to prevent cracking. Once fully dry it is fired and then fired a second time with a glaze.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eI can’t help but see the beautiful symbolism that this offers to us and our lives. The process of becoming who God knows we can be is long, arduous, intense, and difficult. We are stretched and molded and broken and repaired and put through fire. But what we don’t understand in the moment, is the beauty He is making out of our lives. Just imagine what we can become if we let Him shape us. Just as a potter holds the clay in His hands, Christ holds us in His hands. Kintsugi is a Japanese pottery technique where broken pottery is repaired with a golden lacquer. The pottery is considered even more valuable and beautiful after the process is complete. The cracks are considered a beautiful part of history that should be honored, not flaws that needs to be covered up and hidden. I wanted to create a painting where the pot is still in the midst of repair. With big pieces missing, still in the trenches, still enduring the process of healing. There are some parts of my life that feel really broken right now. All I can do is keep putting each foot forward, believing that Christ has the power to put that brokenness back together. To me this is a depiction of what mental health can look like. Often we feel that our brokenness needs to be hidden and 'fixed'. Kintsugi teaches us that the broken parts of us are beautiful and nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, in Japanese culture, pots that are repaired with Kintsugi are considered more valuable and special than they were before. This woman cannot see the flowers that are blossoming from her, but they are there. This was one of the most requested words of the year for 2024. When I read this word, I was reminded of a scripture I love in Ezekiel 36:26 which reads ‘I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit will I put within you’. I knew in this piece I wanted the Savior to be giving a new, healed heart back to this woman. A heart that she thought was broken beyond repair, but that the Savior took in his healing hands and made new. In this piece you can see that the heart has been repaired with Kintsugi. Kintsugi (\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/%E9%87%91%E7%B6%99%E3%81%8E\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e金継ぎ\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e) is a Japanese pottery technique that I love to incorporate into my artwork. When the piece is put back together, the cracks are highlighted with a lacquer, rather than being disguised. Pottery repaired with Kintsugi is considered even more precious and valuable than it was before.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI feel like the word ‘healing’ really captures what I have strived to do as an artist. It is a very special word to me. Over the past four years, my family has changed a lot. My parents separated and have been going through a divorce, and my idea of what my family was totally shattered. I felt like my heart was broken. You know that deep, deep sorrow, so deep it feels like your heart is physically in pain. What has gotten me through that pain is painting about my Savior, and also incorporating Kintsugi into my artwork. It has truly healed me, and healed my relationships. I know that He is the one that can taken broken things and make them new. Painting is how I work through my emotions, so I am often painting during a difficult trial or hard period of my life. My paintings help me get through my hard times, and in turn I hope that they help others through their hard times. However, because of this, I don’t have a ton of paintings about joy. That He perfectly, deeply understands our pain and our struggles, our sorrows, our challenges, our temptations. But painting this also reminded me that I believe He is with us in all of our joy as well. All of our triumphs, all of our laughter, all of our happiness, all of our love. He perfectly knows those feelings too, and He celebrates with us. He mourns with us, AND He celebrates with us. There are so many things to do, accomplish, endure. The weight we carry can feel extra heavy. Relief is such a sweet word, and I think that for many of us it is what we yearn for. When our muscles get so tired, our backs so sore, and our hearts feel faint, relief is what we pray for. All the things I worry about and struggle with. All the responsibilities that can feel so heavy. All of the difficulties that feel overwhelming. Maybe to you, these angels represent family and friends who have passed on, guardian angels who watch over you. We may not be able to see them, but I know that they are there, trying their best to provide us with relief. I know that they are there, because the Savior promised it. Mother’s Day can be a really hard day for so many people, and those beautiful people are always in my mind this time of year.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003eIn many cultures, butterflies are symbolic of loved ones who have passed away. They are a reminder that although your person is no longer with you physically, they are still with you and watching over you. In my mind, butterflies are little messengers from heaven, sent from your loved ones to remind you that they are and always be with you.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003eI hope that this painting can bring peace to some of your hearts this Mother’s Day. Many of you have lost your mom, your step mom, your baby, your friend, your sister, your mother-figure, your grandma, and the list goes on. Whoever is waiting for you up in heaven, I hope that this piece helps you feel their love all around you. When pottery is fixed with Kintsugi, it is considered far more valuable than it was before. I love to think of my relationship with Christ in this way. He is the one person who understands all the emotions and pain I cannot articulate. In this piece, the girl’s dress is a patchwork of different shades of blue. There have been seasons of my life where I have only felt a tinge of blue. Seasons where I have felt none at all. Over the past few months, my anxiety over these changes and ‘unknowns’ has been increasing and increasing. I’ve found myself desperate to feel some peace and some respite. As I’ve sought this peace, I have tried my best to turn to the Savior. In doing so, I came across Isaiah 46:4 which says, “Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. Not only is He with me in those moments, He is carrying me in those moments. Over the years, I have had a hard time figuring out how to depict anxiety. In my mind anxiety is red\/orange\/pink. In this piece, the girl is covered in ‘anxiety’, which I depicted with a lot of overlapping, erratic scribbles. I feel like these scribbles capture the emotions I feel when I am very anxious. When I describe what it’s like to live with anxiety, I always say that it feels like my mind, heart, and body are constantly humming and buzzing. Nothing is ever silent or peaceful. The two times that changes is when I am painting and when I feel close to the Savior. When I do my best to feel close to Him, He has given me the gift of peace. He has the power to calm my anxious mind and heart.
